M6 TOLL CHIEFS EYE ALBION DEAL; Sponsorship to aid troubled road.(News)

Byline: EXCLUSIVE BY CHRIS LEPKOWSKI

WEST Bromwich Albion have held talks with M6 Toll chiefs about the possibility of an ambitious shirt sponsorship package. Bosses at the First Division club have spoken to counterparts from the country's first toll motorway with a view to securing a deal for next season.

If the talks are successful the M6 Toll logo would be displayed on Albion's shirts.

Promotion-chasing Albion's deal with West Bromwich Building Society expires at the end of this campaign in May and they have already begun the search for next season's sponsors. The club has declined to comment and it is understood a final announcement on the choice of shirt sponsor is not expected until mid-April.

If the M6 Toll talks are successful it would guarantee the troubled Staffordshire highway massive exposure on a nationwide level.

The new road is in desperate need of a boost after Macquarie Infrastructure Group, the Australian group behind the road, revealed that driver figures were well down on expectations.

Another survey also suggested that 90 per cent of businesses were boycotting the controversial road, which opened late last year and runs from Coleshill to Cannock, due to expensive toll charges for lorries. Another company linked with Albion is Newreg.com, which also sponsors Preston North End.

The internet firm specialises in personalised number plates and would be able maximise the marketing and sales potential of WBA number plates, which are popular with Baggies supporters.
