Fed: Labor forces defence to undergo long-needed reorganisation

CANBERRA, Jan 1 AAP - Today's seemingly monolithic defence organisation was once a
riven bureaucracy with each service represented by its own minister and chief who presided
over epic turf wars for every budget dollar.
That all came to an end under the Labor government of Gough Whitlam, which created
the organisation much like it is today with one minister, one defence chief and one departmental
secretary.
