FED: Policeman and fugitive die in NT roadblock = 2
The dead policeman's wife had been notified of the shooting, police said.
Hours after the shooting, the body of the gunman remained in the scrub where he fell.
His identity was not known but police said it appeared he was the same man involved in a
shooting incident at a property at nearby Kentish Road, near Acacia, south of Darwin.
Police said that at 10.30 last night shots were fired at a house in which a man, woman and
young girl were sheltering.
A neighbour who tried to block the gunman's path with a truck suffered facial injuries when
the vehicle's windscreen shattered.
The gunman then tried to start the truck but another man emerged from inside the house and
attacked him with a baseball bat, police said.
During the struggle the gunman's firearm discharged and blew off the other's man index
finger.
Both he and the neighbour went to hospital as police were called in. The woman and girl
were unhurt.
